David Cripps' Biography

 

     The British-born conductor, hornist and teacher,
David Cripps, is one of the most distinguished and
experienced performing musicians and peda-
gogues on the scene today.  He began playing the
horn at the age of fourteen, was quickly accepted
into the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain,
where he became Principal Horn almost immed-
iately, and made his solo debut in London's Royal
Festival Hall, performing Mozart's 4th Horn Con-
certo under the baton of Sir Malcolm Sargent.  He
was awarded an Open Scholarship to the Royal
Academy of Music, London, where he studied horn
and conducting, winning all available prizes.
     There followed a succession of Principal Horn
appointments - BBC National Orchestra of Wales,
Hallé Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, culmi-
nating in a ten-year spell as Principal Horn in the
London Symphony Orchestra.  This period included
the music directorships of André Previn and Claudio
Abbado, and included guest conducting appear-
ances of Bernstein, Ozawa, Böhm, Kubelik, and
many other legendary names.  As well as many
solo appearences with all these orchestras, he was
involved in such diverse achievements as playing
over thirty performances of Mahler's 5th Symphony
with Claudio Abbado in UK and on tours around the
world, and leading the Horn Section with the LSO in
all the original soundtracks of the Star Wars and
Superman movies with John Williams.
     David was also highly active and in great de-
mand as a freelance studio musician in London,
playing in countless movie, TV and audio sessions.
The list of London contractors who have employed
him includes Sidney Sax and the National Philhar-

  monic, Peter Willison and the Sinfonia of London, Nat Peck,
George Hamer, Isobel Griffiths and many others.  Composers
and conductors he worked with in this genre have included
Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner, Marcus Dods, Harry Rabinowitz;
also among a great many others.  He worked extensively
in the West End theatre scene, having played in all kinds
of musicals: Phantom of the Opera, Chess, Oliver,
Sunset Boulevard, constitute just a small selection.
     He has appeared many times as Guest Principal
Horn with all of the London orchestras at vari-
ous times, both in UK and overseas.  He toured
South Korea and Japan as Guest Principal Horn
with the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in
1986.
     David Cripps was Professor of Horn at the
Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London from
1974 to 1983, and Senior Horn Tutor at the Roy-
al Northern College of Music in Manchester from
1988 to 1996.  he has coached and given mas-
ter classes all over the world.  Additionally, he
was Brass and Wind Coach for the European
Union Youth Orchestra, and was visiting Horn
Coach at the Domaine Forget in Quebec for
three years.  He was visiting Professor at East-
man School of Music in 2003, and Horn Pro-
fessor at Northern Arizona University from
2003-2004.  He has been more active as
a conductor in recent years, having led
concerts in London with both the Phil-
harmonia and Royal Philharmonic Or-
chestras, and with the Windsor Sym-
phony in Ontario, Canada.
 

     In 2003 he relocated to the United States, when he accepted the position of Interim Director of Orchestras at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, as well as being responsible for the Horn Studio.  During this period he was Principal Horn in the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra.  Professor Cripps was appointed to the faculty of the Florida State University in 2004, since when he has also
 
been Principal Horn in the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra.  He has appeared in several US orchestras as a guest or substitute, including the Rochester Philharmonic and Phoenix Symphony, where he was Guest Principal Horn in the summer of 2006.
     David Cripps is now based in Flagstaff, AZ, and is accepting professional bookings, both for solo and orchestral/ensemble engagements.  He is a member of Local 47 (Hollywood) of the American Federation of Musicians.
